City forgets INA's Rash Behari Bose
Raju Gusain in Dehradun
THE SERVICE book of Rash Behari Bose, freedom fighter and founder- president of the Indian National Army ( INA), is missing from the records of the Forest Research Institute ( FRI) in Dehradun, where he worked for about eight years.
The institute has no idea about the whereabouts of the historic document. Either the service book — containing Bose's photograph, home address and other details — is lost forever or it is lying in some forgotten corner of the FRI. Bose became famous by scripting the bomb attack on Lord Hardinge, the viceroy of India, in Delhi in 1912. He was working as a clerk at the FRI at that time and took a 37- day leave to hatch the bomb conspiracy.
In 2006, the FRI managed to locate a personal file of Bose containing his job application to the FRI director, a request letter for leave, a leave chart of eight years and other papers. But his service book remains missing.
S. S. Negi, director, FRI, says, " The FRI has shifted its campus thrice since 1906. First it was operating from the Rangers' College campus. In 1914, it was shifted to Chand Bagh ( now the Doon School) and in 1926, to the present location. We don't know where the service book is. It probably got misplaced in the shifting process." Bose, born on May 25, 1886 in Palara- Bighati ( Hoogly) village, joined the FRI in September 1906. He was later promoted to the rank of head clerk, drawing a salary of Rs 65. His service was terminated on grounds of long absenteeism in May 1914. He would often go on leave to take part in the freedom struggle.
Bose remains an unsung hero in Dehradun. It is said he used to stay at Ghosi Gali in Dehradun. But there is no evidence to confirm this. The state archive doesn't possess any photograph of him from his Dehradun days. Neither is any function organised to remember him.
Well- known author Ruskin Bond says, " Very little information about Rash Behari Bose is available in Dehradun.Something should be done to gather information about his Dehradun connection." The 1912 bomb attack took the British by surprise. A two- year inquiry into the incident concluded that Bose was the mastermind of the attack. But by the time the British realised the role of the FRI clerk in the conspiracy, he had escaped to Japan.
He continued the struggle against British rule from abroad. On September 1, 1942, he formed the INA with Captain Mohan Singh and Sardar Pritam Singh.Bose was elected president. In 1943, he gave the supreme command of the INA to Subash Chandra Bose.
