Hapy Harela and time to introspect !!!

Posted by: "sanjupahari" sanjupahari@yahoo.com   sanjupahari

Wed Jul 15, 2009 10:55 pm (PDT)

Wishing you a very harela !!!!!Harela is a renowned Uttarakhandi festival celebrated in and around the foot hills of Himalayas to warmly welcome the rainy season every year. It falls on the first day of 'Shravan' (which is tomorrow i.e. 16th July'09 as per Hindu Panchanga for this year). Ten days before the actual celebration, seeds of either five or seven types of grains amongst Maize (Zea maize), Sarson (Brassica spp.), Gahaut (Macrotyloma uniflorum or legume), Jau (Hordeum vulgare),Wheat (Triticum aestivum), Traditional land race(s) of Paddy (Oryza sativa), Mass (Vigna sp.) and  Bhatt (Glycine sp) etc. are mixed and sown in a pot or flat wooden pane called 'chauk' in  darkroom. Water is sprinkled once or twice every day all along until the final worship day arrives. Besides this, gaily painted sculptures of Lord Shiva,Parvati and their offspring are also prepared for worship. In addition, just a day before the actual
celebration (i.e. last day of the month 'Aasarh') mock weeding is performed with small wooden hoe. Finally, the sowing is done ceremoniously either by head of the family or the family priest followed by placing yellowish-green shoots (called Harela) on ears and head.

The essence of Harela lies in the fact that it provides the farmers with an opportunity to experiment with the quality and/or flaws of seeds on small scale which eventually helps them to plan a wiser strategy for mass scale cultivation. Owing to a lot of reasons the area under traditional crops is declining very fast but undoubtedly many of the crop varieties are still conserved because of their socio-cultural and religious values. The role of socio-cultural values in biodiversity conservation is an integral part of the people living in Uttarakhand and Harela plays a significant role in the same. This persuades people to conserve and manage their traditional crop diversity. Probably, in every pahari family AMA-BUBU/IZA-BABU bless their kids and youngsters with the words ,"JEE RAYA JAGI RAYA, DUBE JAI PANAPIYA, SYAU JAI BUDHDHI HOO, SHERAK JAI TARAAN HOO, GAONK PADHAAN HAI JAYA.." .. I know I missed a few
blessings…Despite globalization, there still exist many conventions and regulations set up by our past generations for the protection and management of handfull resources. To a certain extent the present generation is going through the same philosophy following the ideas initiated by our ancestors for conservation and management of the resources that could lead to a greener ambience. Keeping the rapid socio-economic and cultural changes taking place in the society in view these activities need to be emphasized in detail. I am sure the effect of global warming in untouched or unknown to none.....it is high time for all of us to introspect our responsibilities towards greener earth !!!!.  My salute to the people conserving valuable germplasm in the Himalayan agro-ecosystems.On kid's perspective:- Other advantage of the occasion is to provide an opportunity for young dudes, like me :) to add a little more to the pocket money from elders....so
don't forget to get your part kids:) :)Once again I wish you all a very happy Harela. Golu devta hun yauee prarathana chu "myor pahadu ko global warming se bachaya aur sada shukh  samridhdhi banaye rakhiya"

i will still disagree
ayurvedic medications the way they are made now, contain heavy metals
and several have been banned in US by FDA
so always be careful-the biggest problem is you do not know what you are taking
as there is no chemical analysis of these medications and there are no studies regarding side effects
working in united kingdom as a doctor i often see Indian patients having problems/side effects after taking these medications
so i will disagree that these medications dont have side effects-after all plants contain chemicals-datura one of the plant commonly used in some of the traditional medications has atropine, fox glove was widely used rather unsafely for heart failure as it contains digoxine which when used in higher dose can kill you!!

>Hope you doing great out there, m here to add a little on what Anita Ji already said. I would also strongly suggest you to go for the higher studies; you would have a better opportunity in terms of not only to sharpen your expertise  and ability to grow in ME but at the same time a better treatment alternative for your spinal problem.
>Sorry to contradict on, but Ayurvedic medicines work equally well sometime, moreover there isn't any side effect involved so hope is always on!!!!!. However light yoga, swimming etc along with what Anita ji already suggested are equally good..nonetheless going for a better treatment  in the hands of real experts should be the best opinion indeed.

BIMARU Heartland :  Koshiyari vs Koshi ki Yaari
Posted by: "ram prasad" tnordramprasad@yahoo.co.in   tnordramprasad
Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:18 pm (PDT)

Dear Inder Singhji,

You are busy in your event in New York .  Kaul Sahab is busy with his event in Los Angeles .  Rival Uttaranchal and Uttarakhand Associations of North India are busy with their respective conventions.  Indian Americans are doing everything to help themselves and India as well.

The purpose of giving the above title to this mail is to insist that Koshiyari and Koshi ki Yaari has some relationship with  the above initiatives of Indian Americans.  I have discussed with you and with Dr Abraham  the need for Gopio focus on Rural India.  We have discussed your limitations. Politicians too have their limitations.  In the collected documents given at the end  of this mail Shekharji observes:   "Since you have mailed this trivial forgettable issue to some of MPs also xyz@sansad.nic. in I wonder whether they are interested in such things".  Yes.  They should be.  But where is the time with them?  Where is the time with Kaulji and other people association with his team time  to consider some thing about rural India ?  The same thing is true about  all Indian American both organized and unorganized.

Shekharji belongs to Bihar .  He pointed out that he has interest in Koshi and not in Koshiyari.  He had limited knowledge of Phanishwar Nath Renu and his novels.  To give some information about Renu and his novels, the discussion note  given at the end of this mail is being led by an  extract from a scholar who noted something about Renu and Koshi in this .thesis "Visualizing the Nation: Gender and the Construction of Symbolic Nationhood in Colonial and Post Colonial India".
The purpose is to make Indian Americans understand the real problem of India . Some of them like Katyalji and Rayala Ji have discussed this topic  in the mails of Dhumakot Sangliya International Group.  But the discussions were limited only to the failures of the leadership of India  Politicians are important as you know, Kaul Sahab knows and the leaders of Uttarakhand and Uttaranchal Association of North  India know.  Since the events are being organized in USA  will be inaugurated  important US politicians in the respective localities.

What is common between Koshiyari and Koshi ki Yaari.  Koshiyariji is one of the key politicians of Uttarakhand. Koshi is known as the river of sorrow in Bihar .  Koshiyariji has to to work for industrialization of the hilly part of Uttarakhand.  Because the problems of this hilly part of the region were not being attended by Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand was made a separate state.  It has been there for almost a decade now.  Koshiyariji is one of the Ex Chief Minister of this state.  Similarly Mithila may point out that Bhiar is not taking care of Koshi, Mithilanchal should be made a separate state. Bihar had also been divided twice.  Distict Purnia of Bihar was divided several times.

Now Uttarakhand is a small state.  It has five Loksabha MPs.  It has three Rajya Sabha MPs.  The active politicians of Uttarakhand is a separate group with the Project.  They receive all these mails.  These are being mailed regularly to those MPs who can be reached through e-mail.  But there is also "Phatte ki Sarakar" which lives in a column of the weekly Pyara Uttarakhand.  The MPs cannot avoid Phatte ki Sarkar.  This Phatte ki Sarkar carries most of the discussions we have in Dhumakot Sangliya International Group.

Bihar , Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are termed by the famaous social schientist as BIMARU region. This is also the heartland of India and you must be knowing what hartland means in all countries of the world. The Bihar people can also take interest in Uttarakhand and ask it to remove its BIMARI.  They have to allow science tackle the problem of rural industrialization in Uttarakhand.

We would request you to make Gopio play a role in rural development of India '

Novels of Renu and Koshi ki Yaari:. An Extract from the thesis of Sadan Jha
in which he starts from Koshi as follows:

"That's how they explain the continuous erosion of the sand banks of the fast flowing river.."[1] It is because of her body that this landscape has been transformed from a land of forests to the barren land, fallen earth. The dead earth!
However, this dead body, at the moment of the nation's arrival, in the first decade of Indian Independence, placed its demand for the autopsy, for the sake of this locality and also for the sake of the health of the future nation. The novel Parati Parikatha ends up with a celebration of the taming of the river.  The boundary has been delineated, the land has been surveyed and the dam is constructed. The land acquires rainbow shade. Renu writes describing the last sequence of the drama,
Fifth Cycle : The voice of the anchor- frustrated, down, in the suffering community of Kosi, people's awakening whistled the revolutionary spirit…dhu-tu-tu-tu- tu…. The sound of war trumpets. Kosi is flowing, waves are dancing. A big group of half naked people! Break the mountain, haiyo! Assemble stone! We shall tame this  Kosi… children have died, hai rae ( lament)! Wife died, hai re(lament)! The world is shattered, hai re ( lament)!… we have become helpless. Away from home. Months-years put together! Sweat and blood, put together! Lost strength put together! Crush the stone-mountain. Tame this witch. Those who lost we shall rehabilitate… thakkam-thakkam, thakka, thakka! Ghatam-ghatam, ghat-tirrik- tirrik!( sounds)… the roaring of tractors and bulldozers!… waves are subsiding. A laughter! The stage trembles… the audience is awestruck. Who will win—fight soldiers, haiyo! A shadow a dam emerges on the back! Gar-gar-gur- gur
garr-r-r-r-r!….
Slowly sounds disappeared… the colour of the barren land is changing. slowly, slowly…green, red, yellow, velvet… green fields! Waves of colours on the barren land!…[2]
This end is not unusual. Mother India which was released on the same year also ends up with the same celebration. The construction of the dam was imagined as the construction of the temple. Nehru, the first prime minister of India wrote on the Bhakhra Nangal Dam, " Probably nowhere else in the world is there a dam as high as this… As I walked round the site I thought that these days the biggest temple and mosque and gurudwara is the place where man works for the good of mankind. Which place can be greater than this, this Bhakra- Nangal?[3]
The celebration of the embankment over the Kosi in Renu's novel can also be read as the culmination of the heterogeneous time of the locality in the homogeneous empty time of the nation. It is the same concern that encourages him to treat this region as a research laboratory. Here, the issue at stake is not so much of nation's time but the time of the modern scientific development. In Maila Anchal, the protagonist Prashant, who has just graduated in medical sciences goes to Merigunj, a village in this locality, and  began his research to find the solution of the Malaria, a wide spread and fatal disease. But, what is crucial is the fact that the modern medical science, in the novel does not provide any immediate solution to the epidemics of this locality. In fact, the protagonist is searching a solution that lies in the locality itself, in the plants and herbs found in the same locality. However, towards the end, he feels disappointed. He wants to
declare his research as a failure. But, through another voice (in the voice of Mamta a figure eternally waiting as a lover) the reader hear an eternal declaration, " The research never fails doctor! At least you have understood the soil… the love with soil and human beings is not a small thing."

Shri Madhuji,
In last 24 hours I have tried to cool down my tempers, so that I could reply to your mail point wise and appropriately without getting carried away in emotion.
1. The mail in question was neither addressed to you nor its matter relates you/ pointed to you.
2. Last 60 years ...politician. ...etc... why  we netsavvy people only exchange mails and abuse or praise each other rather educating people to vote. Last election saw less than 50% voter use the right. Of course those illiterates or less educated people were lured by some cons to vote against themselves while educated ones preferred their home/office/ circle. Result is here to see. same is the history since 47.
3. prince ...patience. ...You might have gone through my mails to respected ramprasadji, which he shared to everyone where I have made known my status, income, background, knowledge, and fear of company of big, mighty, noble and well connected people. I know, I don't belong to elite group with big ideas and bigger disposable income, who can afford to engage in philanthropy.
4. You, being in USA , can think of lobbying in WB, here in a remote area of Bihar most of my colleagues don't know full form of it.
5.Now a days even parents .... that might be case in USA , or more affluent part of our own country...not in Bihar . It is possible that whole family may have to suffer...or elders may prefer better nourishment to children and hardship for themselves but elders are respected.

5.  Waste removal....Java me bane software me  .net  ka patch nahi lagega though both are software related to same IT industry. even after being an aircraft engineer someone is waste in Bullock cart industry. Whatever great ideas for whole India/world/ huminity/ universe are waste on a forum specially meant for Bihar related issues though Bihar is part of it.
6. He can beg the whole ......NO.  I am not Madan Mohan Malviya or Binoba Bhave who begged for some cause, so no begging. AND CERTAINLY NOT as you told earlier in mail that I am prince with BIG EGO.
Madhuji, your means might be bigger but not the ego. You might have spent several crores from your kitty on society as you think big, earn big, spend big, save big while i earn a modest living but I am not a cheat, not a crap. Your big spent on society does not give u right to expect the same thing from every one and abuse me if i don't meet your expectations. you must not have used such language for me. From your earlier mails to some one else, forwarded by Ramprasadji, I know you are well educated and learned person but something is missing.
7.want to leave the group .......Madhuji, I am not on any of your groups, which one should I leave!
The problem is you reacted unnecessarily and unknowingly that too in a very harsh way. I was NOT wrong on my mail on Bihar group, and after knowing the things about Respected Ramprasadji, I have mended ways and use to discuss things with him on personal mail not on group as I feel when interaction is not going to add something to group then no need of wasting group time on trivial issues. Better spy over personal phone line than announcing everything on loudspkr. Till date I never copied my mails to all my mailing list, but you people are used to it. Instead of reprimanding me in a private mail, u made a scene by copying to all  people/all groups in your mailing list. Since you have mailed this trivial forgettable issue to some of MPs also xyz@sansad.nic. in, I wonder whether they are interested in such thing.
Anyway I appreciate your contribution in time and effort and knowledge to these groups, I respect your knowledge about Indian history and contemporary issues, so I am not taking it DIL PAR or personally but the thing should be cleared to all who read the mail.
Ramprasadji was kind enough to drag me in his fold even after I requested him to delete my id from his mailing list and shown the real person he is.
You are welcome to guide me, if find me somewhere impolite or arrogant as a fellow citizen in personal mail not by abusing in public.
with regards.

There is an old saying and its literal translation is that "Even if the tamarind tree is dead, sourness is not gone!"
For centuries we lived like slaves under Muslims and then under British and last 60 years our politicians ran our nation turned it into a graveyard!
Yet, we have these PRINCES who have no PATIENCE nor temper to try to figure out what actually is happening in these mail exchanges apart from some eccentrics even from Ramprasadji!

Currently, we are working with some Americans and few members of 'bharatmaata' group for a 'Waste Removal Service' project!

Only these continuous discussions for the last 4-5 years on net have consolidated some solid conclusions that any project done with transparency and ability to take it up to world bank or United Nations can help the nation and give nightmares to our sleeping politicians! !!

How else would you bring in volunteers if people do not continue discussing matters that concern(or interest) them???

Now a days even parents are not fed properly in their old age and this man is asking to help some Bhago Devi! Good Luck!! He can beg the whole world but I can guarantee you that nothing is going to come out of it!

Those who want to leave the group are free to do so and they can filter the mails and send them to 'trash' folder too instead of making a scene here!!!

It is HIGH TIME INDIANS need to learn from others that once even Pythagoras came to India to learn something and everyone including Americans, Russians, British, Chinese....Vietname se...are HUMBLE enough to work as TEAM rather than show individual EGO and as a result we are seeking jobs and support from them while we have nothing to offer!!!
Those who do not want to be part of TEAM are free to go on their OWN!!

I am very busy with the work already in hand.  More over I am not good enough to express things.  Dev Singh Rawat edits Gumod Parikrama for inclusion of material for the column Phatte ki Sarkar.  If some one wants to do similar work in English I can easily provide copies of such mails as this one.

Gar-gar-gur- gur
>garr-r-r-r- r!….

UTTARAKHAND CAPITAL ISSUE
Posted by: "mp.mehta ." mp.mehta@sify.com   mahipal.mehta
Wed Jul 15, 2009 1:16 am (PDT)

Dosto,

As you aware, Gairsain was the proposed capital of Uttarakhand before the
state came into existence in 2000. When Uttarakhand state was formed
Dehradoon was made as a temporary Capital and Dixit Commission was then made
to study the feasibility whether Gairsain should be made Capital or not.
However, the Commission has submitted its report to Govt after 8 yrs, which
has been served by the ruling Govt in assembly yesterday. The Commission has
given Dehradoon first place in the report whereas Gairsain has been the low
importance due to water and other geographical reasons. The Opposition and
alliance of ruling Govt UKD has directly turned down the Report and has
alleged for political conspiracy in this report..

It is obvious through different surveys conducted by different agencies time
to time, that Citizen of Uttarakhand are always in favour of Gairsain to be
the capital as it has sentimental connection as well as development
expectation from the people. Since the Commission report says that
Uttarakhand capital should remain at Dehradoon and there is uproar in
assembly and sound of agitation from other parts of UK.

Do UK need another agitation for shifting the capital state-wide? You can
participate in this debate through the below link :

http://www.merapaha d.com/forum/ development- issues-of- uttarakhnd/ should-uk's-capital-to- be-shifted/

Are you insured enough to tackle a crisis?

Are you insured enough to tackle a crisis?

Sunil Dhawan and Deepti Bhaskaran, Outlook Money

Leading life is somewhat similar to driving a car. Driving a car entails preliminary checks to see if every part is working fine: the right pressure in the tyres, adequate coolant, smoothly working clutch and engine parts.
All these, backed by a full fuel tank, imply that one is in control and set for a long drive. Life similarly asks for control over various things so that we can have a good time living it.
What one earns, spends and saves in the present are not the only indicators of how well one is in control of one's financial life. To keep things under control, one should also do a good job of making provisions to meet future financial needs. Insurance is a key part of this planning. We look at provisions like health and life insurance covers in addition to those for house, home loan and car(s).
Health insurance
The right cover. Unlike life insurance, where you can figure out the right sum assured amount by using some thumb rules, arriving at an optimum health cover is usually difficult. Says Deepak Mendiratta, managing director, Health and Insurance Integrated, a health insurance consulting firm: "There are no calculations or thumb rules to arrive at a cover. However, you could look at it in two ways.
"First, check for any hereditary ailment within your family or the kind of ailments your peers or friends usually encounter and cover yourself appropriately.
"Second, see how much money can you put away every year so that a sum insured could be looked at accordingly. "
9 questions to check if you are in control
* Is anyone financially dependent on me?
* If yes, then how much life cover should I buy?
* Should I go for a pure term insurance plan?
* Can I manage my investments separately?
* Should I buy a bundled plan like an endowment policy or a Ulip?
* Till what age should I keep myself covered?
* Have I planned for long-term financial goals of my children and myself?
* Is my nominee aware of the covers taken?
* Am I reviewing my coverage needs regularly?
Plugging gaps. You could simply buy another health insurance policy to the first one to increase your total sum insured amount. You can club the two policies to meet the hospitalisation expenses, if the need arises.
However, you can never claim an amount higher than the medical expenses you incur. A family floater is also a good way to bump up your cover. It is bought for the entire family and the sum insured opted for is available to all.
You could also top up your cover by looking at policies with benefits like critical illness plans and hospital cash plans. Since these policies pay in lump sums, they are usually designed to take care of your income stream for the period you are hospitalised.
Life insurance
Get term, get control. Life insurance is meant for those whose financial needs you would like to be met after you are no more. Review your situation periodically to maintain adequate cover.
Plugging gaps. Check on two things to identify any gap in your term insurance. The first is the coverage amount. The most important thing is to estimate your dependents' financial needs in the unfortunate event of your death. Take into account the lifestyle they are accustomed to and the one you would want for them in your absence.
A thumb rule for those early in their career is to have a minimum cover of about eight times their gross annual income. As one ages, it may be trimmed to about five times the gross annual income.
Now, check the duration of the cover. See if there is a period which is not covered. It is not right for a 30-year-old man to buy a term plan for 15 or 20 years. Buying a term plan at around age 50 is costly and there are health issues.
6 steps to buy a term plan to be in control
* Identify insurers that offer policies for the longest term
* Also look for policies that have maximum maturity age
* Choose three insurers with the lowest premiums for your age and other parameters
* Refer to websites not only to find out the offered premiums, but also compare them
* Go for the annual payment option over the single premium option because, otherwise, if the rates fall in the future, you stand to lose
* Review after every addition (for example, parents becoming financially dependent on you) or deletion (children getting settled) of financial liability
Unlike endowment plans, premium of term plans rises as its duration increases. However, life is uncertain and you should ideally choose a plan that covers you for long.
Protect your house
* Opt for a Householder' s Package Policy
* Take cover even against technical or mechanical breakdowns
* Buy through brokers or agents
Term cover can be dropped easily once financial responsibilities are over. Currently, some insurers are offering term plans with coverage till age 75 or a term of 30 years.
If you have a home loan, you should take a term plan or a loan cover term plan propotionate to the home loan amount. Ideally, the plan should start with the first home loan EMI.
How to stay in control
Review insurance plans regularly to accommodate changes in your life
Life cover
* Revaluate cover after changes in take-home income, family status, financial liability and after spouse discontinues or resumes work
Health cover
* Buy a basic policy in addition to employer's cover
* You can top it up with floater plans, benefit policies like critical illness plans and hospital cash plans
* Look at exclusion clauses
Auto cover
* If you are buying directly from insurer, bargain for best possible price. Bargain with brokers too
* Don't compromise on cover for a discount. Always check out what covers you are getting
* Insure car on full IDV. Higher discounts might mean a lower IDV. Ask for the exact IDV
* Ask insurer if it has tie-ups with dealers of your car model so that you can get cashless claim settlement
* Co-payment clause, known as 'excess' or deductible in the policy, makes you bear a portion of the claim. A higher deductible would mean lower premium since the risk shifts from the insurer to you. You could opt for a higher deductible to get more discounts. But, this means that if there is a claim, your liability to share the bill would increase

Happy Harela to all
Posted by: "Anubhav" anubhav.upadhyay@gmail.com   kumar_anubhav
Wed Jul 15, 2009 8:38 pm (PDT)

<http://www.uttarakh andandbeyond. com/2008/ 02/08/harela- and-bhitauli/>

Harela is remarkably an ultimate Uttarakhandi festival that is been
celebrated to welcome the rainy season. This festivity falls on the *first
day of Shravan, (which is of course tomorrow as per Hindu Panchanga)*. Ten
days before the due date, seeds of either five or seven kinds of grains are
mixed together and sown in pots inside the darkroom, The sowing is done
either by the head of the family or the family priest. It is done
ceremoniously and water is sprinkled daily till last day worship. In
addition, one day before the actual celebration of the festival (last day of
Month Aasarh) mock weeding is been done with small wooden hoes. Gaily
painted images of Shiva and Parvati and their off springs are prepared and
worshipped on the Shankranti day. Yellowish -green shoots Harela are placed
on the head gear.

In every house AMA-BUBU/IZA- BABU use to bless with following words

*JEE RAYA JAGI RAYA, DUBE JAI PANAPIYA, SYAU JAI BUDHDHI HOO, SHERAK JAI
TARAN HOO, GAONK PADHAAN HAI JAYA,,,,*

The consequence of Harela lies in the fact that it provides an opportunity
to the cultivator to experiment the quality or flaw of seeds in small scale
which suppose to use in mass scale, at the same time for young dudes (like
me ) its time to get pocket money from elders.

Once again I wish you all a very happy Harela. Bhagwan se yehi prarathana
hai is prithwi ko global warming se dure rakhna aur sada such&samridhdhi
banaye rakhna

Best Wishes and Regards

Anubhav
