Hi Group,

Any member who has done the Doodhatoli trek near Thailisain. I shall be
interested in knowing how much exactly the distance is for trek from
Thailisain and what is the scope of accomodation. Also, how much long Binsar
would be from this place. I have taken the information from internet to some
extent but i shall be interested in live experince (of someone who has done
this trek).
We are also looking at the option of starting trek from Thailisain and
comeback via Saraikhet route but we are yet to figure that out if that is
quite possible.

We are 4 trekkers from Delhi interested in doing the trek between 14-18
August in the age group of 26-28. Likeminded fellows are invited to join.

Our purpose is to highlight travel destinations in Uttarakhand and bring
them to public's notice via Internet. We are looking forward to launch
'Project-Promote Uttarakhand' later sometimes in September for highlighting
lesser known destinations and treks in our regions like Gujru-gadhi, Diba
Danda but we need groups contribution to know hidden places that only is
known to them but not outside the Uttaranchal overall. We shall prmote
places by writing travelogues on these places and posting them on major
travel sites and through our own site.

Enthusiast travellers can check some of the work on
www.bugshead.blogspot.com and www.flickr.com/myth_drinker

Best Regards,

Himanshu

Friends lot to mention when we talk about public transport facility in our
very own UK.

I keep traveling to my hometown as my parents are there. However, everytime
I feel like going home something stops me is just because of poor transport
facility. Lack of good systematic approach by transport department in UK. I
would not like to take too much time of yours. Just to site an example where
Govt roadways drives have been asked to stop their buses to those poor
'Dhabas' where they just loot and don't provide good meals/snacks at all and
charges are extreme high. Although this initiative will curb on the special
settings which some bad ppl in transport department have done with dhaba
owners, but prime concern should have been good quality food and not this
initiative which will again lead to normal loot. The difference now is that
it is official to loot now.

See this attached picture.

How to handle a situation

A man once went to see a doctor complaining of aches and pains all over his body.

"Doctor my whole body hurts me," he moaned. The doctor asked him to show exactly where the pain was.

The man explained, "When I touch my shoulder, it hurts. When I touch my back it hurts. When I touch my legs, they hurt."

The doctor did a thorough examination and told the man-
"Sir, there is nothing wrong with your body. Your finger is broken. That is why it hurts wherever you touch. Get your finger plastered, rest it for a couple of weeks and all of your pains will disappear."!!

SPIRITUAL COMMENTARY

In life so frequently it is our own perspective that causes us pain or pleasure.

As we go through life "feeling" the world with our fingers, if our finger is broken naturally we will experience pain everywhere. But,

we make the mistake of blaming the external world for our ailments: "My job is over-taxing, my husband is too demanding, my wife nags, my children are disobedient, my in-laws don't understand me, etc. etc."

But if you look throughout the world you will be able to find someone who has the same type of job, but is calm, or someone who has the same type of spouse but is happy, or someone who has the same type of children but is patient, or someone who has the same type of in-laws but is grateful.

What is it that allows 2 people to experience the same external situation but respond in 2 different ways?

Our own perspective. Our own perception. The key, then, is not to try to change every situation in our life, but rather to change the glasses through which we see the world.

Sure, if we have a fixable situation at the office or at home, we should definitely do our best to improve it. But, what we have observed is that if someone has the nature to be dissatisfied, or the nature to be stressed, or the nature to be pained, that person's nature is not going to change simply by changing the external situation.

A massage for the back or shoulder or legs would not help the man in our earlier example because it is his finger which is broken. He could spend hundreds of dollars to ease the pain in his body, but unless he puts his broken finger in a splint, he will continue to experience pain every time that finger touches the various parts of his body.

Similarly, we run around through life trying to "fix" our jobs or marriages or family life, but frequently the reality is in our own perspective. If we spend the same amount of energy "fixing" our perspective as we spend trying to "fix" our spouse or children, everything would be fine.

This is not to say that pains and troubles don't really exist in our day to day life. Of course they do.The man in our example may also have a stiff back or sore shoulders. But the excruciating pain he experienced was due not to the minor aches and pains in his body, but due to the severely broken finger with which he was touching them.

Similarly, our jobs and our families are taxing. They demand a lot of us. But the unbearable pain many of us experience is due not to the demands and commands from without, but due to the demands and commands from within ourselves.

In the Gita it is said that we are our best friend and also our own worst enemy, depending upon how we live our lives.

In this New Year, let us all take some time to examine what our own personal "broken finger" is.

What is it within ourselves that causes us to experience pain in the world? What irrational fear, what unfulfillable desire, what selfish motive, what ego-driven need has broken the finger with which we feel the world or has colored the glasses with which we see? We spend so much time examining others, but very little time examining our own selves.

The Source of all joy and peace lies within us.

We are blocked from that Source by a host of desires, fears and ignorance.

The key to finding and tapping into that Source must come from within.

Let us find the key within ourselves and unleash the Ocean of Divine Bliss in our lives!!

Basmati rice charts a new course for marketing traditional knowledge

The Financial Express, June 25, 2007
New Delhi, India

World may still be debating on how effectively to commercialise traditional knowledge for the benefit of all stakeholders, but Basmati rice in India has shown the way.

Appropriate policy support and assured markets for a premium price have helped to preserve and conserve the traditional knowledge of basmati and commercialise it on a large-scale benefiting all stakeholders.

The long grain aromatic basmati rice grown in India and Pakistan has a premium market in the world. Though the annual production of Basmati rice in both the countries is around 2 million tonne, it commands a market size of over $1,167 million. Over the years, scientists have evolved some high yielding varieties of Basmati to ensure higher production, but the consumer preference is particularly for brown traditional basmati varieties. European Union, particularly, is in favour of duty derogation for import of Basmati having pure parental lines.

Some commonly known traditional basmati varieties in India are-Basmati-370, Basmati-386, Type-3, Taraori, Basmati (HPC-19), Basmati-217 and Ranbir Basmati (IET-11348). Evolved Indian Basmati varieties are-Pusa Basmati-1 (IET-1064), Punjab Basmati-1 (Bauni Basmati), Haryana Basmati-1 (HKQ-228/IET-10367), Mahi Sugandhi, Kasturi and Super Basmati.

Among largely traded traditional varieties, Pakistan has Kernal Basmati and Super Basmati as an evolved variety.

"It is a unique partnership where all stakeholders-farmers, industry and exporters-stand to benefit in cultivation of Basmati. It is an example of how traditional knowledge can be effectively be conserved and commercialised," says RS Seshadri of Tildariceland, a leading exporter of Basmati rice.

Some experts are of the view that Basmati rice was traditionally grown in Dehradun region in the Uttarakhand state and later began to be cultivated in other parts undivided India during the British regime. However, today, Basmati is the common heritage of both India and Pakistan and both these countries are planning to jointly claim rights for geographical indications (GIs) for this aromatic long grain rice.

Traditional Basmati varieties, however, began practically going out of cultivation in Uttarakhand as farmers switched over to growing high yielding varieties of grains with application of chemicals. Rapid urbanisation and loss of farmlands was another factor.

The situation took a U-turn from year 2000, when Uttarakhand government set up its Organic Commodities Board and encouraged cultivation of traditional Basmati rice through organic farming.

The Board arranged for collection of seeds of traditional Basmati varieties and selected two varieties namely Dehraduni and Taraori for largescale cultivation in Dehradun and Udhamsingh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand. The result was that till date more than 1000 farmers in about 170 villages are growing traditional Basmati rice in about 1000 hectare land, according to a recent study conducted by Ghayur Alam of the Dehradun-based Centre for Sustainable Development.

The study says that farmers in Dehradun district cultivating organic traditional Basmati earn Rs 4,243 per acre more than farmers cultivating high yielding varieties of rice through chemical farming. Similarly farmers in Udhamsingh Nagar district earn Rs 1,377 per acre more than those farmers resorting to chemical agriculture and growing high yielding varieties.

The study commissioned by the CUTS Kolkata Resource Centre suggests that conservation and commercialisation of all other traditional knowledge relating to medicinal herbs and rare species, if the growers get lucrative returns from an assured market and the traditional knowledge is protected through GIs and community rights are ensured.

The APEDA chairman, KS Money said that the government through his organisation is promoting the brand image of Indian Basmati abroad. "APEDA is also responsible for promotion and encouraging exports of organic food", he said.
