Uttarakhand - The Abode of God on the Road of Environmental Disaster

Last month I visited my native state, Uttarakhand, people who are indulged power generation and construction of dams as employees of big corporate and Nigams boastfully stated that Uttarakhand would be Urja Perdesh (Energy State) as the government has plans for 220 power projects aiming to generate 24,876 MW of power and all credit goes to current and previous governments, In its quest to make the state a major energy producer or an urja pradesh, the government is promoting the tapping of all its major rivers and tributaries for hydropower.

The website of the Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited, lists a many as 169 small, medium and big hydroelectric power projects to be built by 2012.

Apart from central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) like Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (SJVNL), and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), there are also many private sector companies that have joined the bandwagon of development. These include Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd., GVK Industries Ltd., Reliance Energe, GMR Energy and strangely, Krishna Knitwear and Vishal Exports.

According to their estimates about 2.2 million out of 8.4 million people [more than a quarter of the total population of the state, will be directly or indirectly affected by these projects in more than a dozen river valleys - houses will sink, forests will be acquired, water resources will dry up, and arable lands submerge.

The area falls in seismic zone IV and V, which make it highly prone to earthquakes.

It is disheartening in the name of revenue and development, common person is mesmerized by the state run agencies. Barring few concerned intellectuals no body is raising hue and cry for the support and protection of environment. Government and its officials are deciding faith of a state which is very vulnerable to environment in stability. The Panchyati Raj Institutes and common masses should come forward to stop government doing exploitation of environment in the name of development. Industrialists and powerful contractors nexus should be exposed through IEC campaigns and supporting environmental movements. We want natural surroundings undisturbed so that people and God could reside peacefully listening the chirping of rare birds soothing their soul and mind.
