Tourists flock to Uttarakhand

Himalayan shrines among the major attractions for the visitors
Himalayas Calling: The famous Hindu pilgrimage shrine of Badrinath has always been a big draw.
All roads seem to be leading to the higher Himalayan shrines, meadows and valleys these days for tourists rushing up the hills of Uttarakhand. Hotels and dharamshalas in Hardwar and Rishikesh are booked to capacity with local entrepreneurs doing brisk business here and all along the yatra route.
The Kedarnath area alone reported a queue of over 5,000 pilgrims trekking up to the shrine on Monday.
The tourists seem to be lapping up the sweet roasted corn, plums and other hill fruits being sold by enterprising children on the roads near the villages. "We have enjoyed the yatra better this time, and if such enthusiasm continues among the local shopkeepers and young entrepreneurs, Uttarakhand will soon graduate to one of the best destinations in the country," observed Seema and her husband J. Mukherjee from Kolkota.
Similar sentiments were aired by Ramaswamy from Bangalore and Santokh Singh from Amritsar.
"According to official estimates, about one lakh visitors have enjoyed a holiday or pilgrimage at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri so far this season and a lot more are expected to do so in the next few weeks," said State Tourism Development Board Joint Director A.K. Dwivedi.
The pilgrims and nature-lovers' rush can also be seen at Govindghat from where one treks through a magnificent landscape either to the Sikh shrine of Hemkunt Sahib or the Valley of Flowers.
"Special arrangements have been made to provide better facilities to the visitors. Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri is briefed on the situation every day," said Mr. Dwivedi.
Mr. Dwivedi urged the travellers to follow the road safety rules and lodge a complaint with the local officials if they get a raw deal anywhere. "We come to the Himalayas to enjoy and appreciate nature and should try to return with the choicest memories and not tragedies," he said.

Dear Sir/Madam,
The shrines of Badri-Kedar alongwith Ganotri-Yumnotri always have been
receiving great tourist flock. However, i tell you more than a 1/3 tourist
is from Uttarakhand only. And majority from South India and Kolkatta. It has
two fold reason: One, the idea of pilgrimage and Two, vacations. In recent
times, the tourism overall is down in Uttarakhand. I don't know about
Himachal, but yes, here in Uttarakhand it is half percent down than the
previous year's figure. Some reasons that i was told are - Exorbitant hike
in tarrifs, Bad conditions of road and transporation (read as connectivity)
and overly priced food articles that's too bad on taste and hygeine. Infact,
you would agree that percentage of foreign tourist even has decreased
severely. The tourist though willing to pay a little higher over for things
but of course seek comfort (for bedding), quality (of food) and smooth
journey (through swift roads). The fact seems very true that tourist are
being cheated and so no tourist then returns back to these places and to the
places where they have encountered these petty thieves in the form of shops,
hotels and of course the transportation. The goverment has demonstarted its
incapability to provide security and comfort to the tourist. Infact very
much people of Uttarakhand have suffered these conditions. I have been told
by a Hotel owner in Ukhimath last month, that this is season time and
these 4 months (May-Aug) we receive heavy rush. He continued that i
accomodated a Bengali family in my kitchen and charged a 1000 Rs. all i had
served them was tea. This example and many e.gs like this display that this
tourist is facing problems of inconvenience, and being cheated. Infact i was
told by an Old couple from Kumaon region, that they were denied room in a
lodge and then later given to some other tourist. The reason, the
Uttarakhandis (locals), they don't pay as much a family from Delhi could
pay. Recently in Nainital, i was told the tourist traffic is much lesser
this year than pervious ones due to same problems. No tourist even wants to
recommend these places to fellow tourists. Same i have heard in Mukteshwar.
GMVN/KMVN they have increased tariffs upto 20 percent but have these
improved upon the facilities that they provide. NO! The goverment has no
regulations and even if they have its only on papers. So who'll listen to
the tourist. Already the Uttarakhand based Nigams are making losses. Look at
their food quality and serving timings. I have experienced this
personally. The situation is so worse that now most of PWD and Forrest Guest
Houses have started denying the tourist which they judge based on tourists
appearence and paying capablity (otherwise refuse on the terms that DM
permission is necessary). How many of us actually no that a common man seek
shelter at PWDs and Forrest houses if its available at a moderate cost which
goes to the state govt. and the caretaker has to give but...
Tourism is in bad taste in Uttarakhand. The goverment is sleeping with eyes
open and ears closed. Tourist is suffering with a promise not to return
back. Common man has loss of employment. And above all, nobody is
bothered.... Well what for... until we have our stomachs filled and morals
that have rusted inside us.
Thanks and Regards,
Himanshu Dutt Jakhmola

Namsakar to all the PG members
Mr Himanshu is narrating a true face of tourism in UK.Its very unforutunate
to say all this but its true. Even I have faced all this.
I went to Auli with my wife and booked GM nigam hotel but the condition of
room and
food quality in the hotel was below std. and charges were so high...1500/-
per day.
exculding the meals etc.For meals we had to depend on nearby canteen
running by a local there.
Auli is one the world famous tourist place known for its beauty, best
skiing slopes and longest / highest roopway.
but condition of rooms and food quality is below std. even in nigam hotel.
After that we went to Joshimath , earlier they were charging Rs 950/- per
day from us that was jumped to
1500/- per day on the 1st day of May , saying its now tourist season has
started from 1st May so we increase the charges , that for the same
rooms. For meals we again had to depend on outside.
so perheps its true that presently tourism is in bad taste in Uttarakhand.
thanks

Hi,
Yes, Ujad Hote Pahad ke Gaon, indeed reflects a great social concern but i
agree with the constraints that a common man living on Pahad faces. Neeraj
Joshi has very well pointed out the facts about umemployment which is
prevailing at large. I completely agree with the author and feel sorry for
such a state of Hills...
Thanks Ved Ji, for the article.
