Dear Deepak,
This idea came to my mind from a similar project run by the Dept of
Sci and tech with help of an NGO in some villages of Almora a few yrs
ago. In other countries they start the project for children of class
3 with-'know ur class room. Each child prepares a plan (map) of the
classroom. It shows the location of the blackboard, teacher's chair,
seating arrangement etc. Children are given simple ideas of
proportion. For ex the largest object in the class is a black board,
compared to tht the teacher's pen will not be visible in the map bec
of the scale.
The next stage is 'know ur school' for students of class VI. They
show location of various trees, water tap, naula, entrance to school
etc. In other words this makes them aware of their surroundings.
Further skills are developed wen kids start with 'know ur village'
maps-class IX onwards. To do this one needs a hand held GPS and a
laptop for full efficiency. Without them one can do it with
approximation (no harm in tht) but recording data becomes easier with
a lap top. But to begin with a field notebook can be given to kids.
Each one of them notes in his note book and at the end of the work
one with best hand writing records all the inofrmation in the field
note book.
The record runs as under:
date.
traverse from: Mohan's house to naula east of village-distance
(.....paces) . Pacing shud be done preferably by one boy/gal only.
His/her pace can be measured on a known distance on a flat ground.
Average pace of a child is around 70 cm. Thus if he/she walks and
counts 100 paces the approximate horizontal distance can be found.
Sense of direction has to be developed with ref to Sun.
Students will record each and every detail-like dump of garbage in
front of pooran chandras house, corner of Kahti's field being used as
shit ground, drain choked in front of lala's res etc.
These details u will find after a few months are of amazing help. Bec
if the village has a large num of trees, lots of shrubs and grass-it
means theres no dearth of water there. If the village is surrounded
by pine trees then water is there but at a depth. If there are lots
of oak trees and buransh then water is definitely there and the like..
U r doing a wonderful job, wat I wanted to tell u was tht it is
better to know ur adversary before u tackle him. Thus know ur
class/school/ home/village/ block programme will go a long way. This is
a continuous process and data keeps pouring-later information can be
formulated out of it.
School kids are ideal work force for tht. Use them only wen they are
free and never use the for more than an hour or so. Make it a playful
thing for them. reward them for gud work and encourage the shirkers.
Due to my personal committments am unable to come else I wud have
gone to one of the villages, camped there for a month and taught them.
Reg rain water harvesting I suggest pl read a series of articles I
have published in boloji.com. Link is given in my orkut home page. I
have covered RWH in hills in tha and also past practices. RWH is not
simply drilling a hole and allowing rain water to go in. It is much
more. One shud use simpler and cheaper methods. One can make a
surface tank where the water with help of drains can be diverted fr
village houses. The tank can then be covered with large polythene.
Tank can be of masonry too. Some enterprising people have purchased
old hosues in Kasardevi area in Almora. They havent changed the
architecture of the house. Instead just connected the roof water
drains to a masonry tank. Those tanks serve for their needs of
growing veg and flowers round the yr plus they use it in the flush
too. One can even attach a filtration plant and use it for drinking.
Best wishes.

Hi! Anamika/All,
Its our mistake... We shd ve mentioned it earlier.
Actually there are 2 set of Students:
1) Who are not going to School (Age 3-8 Years)
2) Who are going to school but lacking due to English, Personality and Maths (5 to 15 Years)
Now , For the first set of Students we are teaching them thru regular methods.. so nothing required for them.
Now For 2nd Type students Age and Class doesn't matter... as they all are at same stage for English, Calculations, Personality and Moral Education.
So you all can help us in designing course for very basic level, assuming Kids of Class 1st.... and same will be applicable for first Year at least.....
We need to create Monthly module.... and start with very basic level but interesting. ... we need to cover that gap between Village School and City Schools... in term of Basic level Personality and confidence.. ..

type of books u mentioned"Practical and Spoken English through Poems and usual words/sentences. ... Calculation thru nice stories and Quiz... Moral edu to tell them whats gud and wats bad since childhood'' are already there in the market and many schools have these in their syllabus....
i want to know the age group and class of kids attending our school.depending on their age we can look for the books and then design syllabus.fun learning books in easy language both hindi and eng are also available for quick maths, science ,gk etc.
we can get a set of these books and give it to village teacher

Dear Deepak jee,
We can use few magazines or books for moral stories...and iam very much positive that stories from these books and magazines will improve there knowledge, moral, cultural values...
childrens can learn many things from these but keep in mind as childrens in village schools generally poor in reading and understanding (good hindi) and thus reluctant... so it is a advise to have some teacher for them to do this for them....
also we should emphases on hindi books for stories as it is too much to expect from them to understand english and this make them reluctant... ...
above is my experience.. ..
- chandamama --- 175/- approx yearly subscription. .
- amar chitr katha....
- Jatak katha, panchatantra, betal pacheesee etc....there are many publishers
any body can sponser magazines... .

Ashok

Dear friends
U are already aware that foundation shuruwaat is working for upliftment of rural people from Kaaligaad and that we are running a kids school there to teach them what they are not getting in regular School. As per our objectives we are now planning to design a new syllabus for Moral Education and personality development of village children so that rural kids may gain confidence and can compete with urban kids at same level.
To achieve our objective inputs are required from all the members of our team.
I would like to have suggestions and ideas from u all on what should be included in syllabus.
I am listing the subjects which will be incorporated in the course
1. Basic useful English with its meaning like Poems/Text/Grammer
2. Quick maths with Example and interesting Facts and Tricks
3. Moral stories and Songs
4. GK and Personility Development Lessons
Hoping to get positive response from all the members.
