Tribute to my village & Chachaji

Dehradun, 6 May: A recent visit to my native village
Nagali (Patti-Nayalchami) in district Tehri was an
eye-opener. I was visiting my village after a gap of
14 years and had little idea of the change that had
taken place since my last visit.

The standard of living of the villagers has certainly
gone up. The mobile phone (though with a weak signal)
has made its way there. It was there to stay and the
new mobile towers, which the BSNL and other companies
are planning to install, were an important issue in
the discussions of the rustic folk. With the mobile
phones gaining popularity, many new stories related to
it were in popular circulation. The most amazing was
related to the fodder collecting women who suffered
fractures after falling from trees when they lost
their balance in the process of attending calls on
their mobiles.

The mobile phones are just about everywhere. One could
spot the handset hanging loosely with the support of a
chord on a beautifully crafted wooden pillar (Tiwara).
The village women carry the set to the jungle while
collecting the daily fodder. The villages these days
present the changing condition of the hill women. They
remained equipped with a chord, sickle, mobile set and
bottle (generally soft drink/mineral water bottles are
reused) to carry water. The hardship of the Garhwali
women remains the same but their lifestyle has changed
a little. The affordable technological advancements
have made it possible!

In the past, villagers wearing clothes with many
patches on them were a familiar sight in my village.
There were many others who used to wear gifted army
uniforms. But, the clothes they wear today proves the
economic prosperity of the villagers. Hardly can one
find a person wearing torn clothes. This is a good
sign! The young children wear jeans, cargo and other
fashionable outfits.

Also, the craze for cricket has taken the new
generation into its grip. They play cricket in the
agriculture fields. Only tried and tested bowlers are
used as experiments could prove costly and a loose
ball can end up flying down the hills. Never to be
located again! In short a cruel SIXER!

The youths of village Nagali look bright and
confident. But, after they complete their 10+2,
confusion prevails regarding the future move. What
after 10+2? Career guidance at intermediate level is
the need of the hour. Tehri district has one of the
highest numbers of hotel professionals from
Uttarakhand working abroad. It is rather strange that
hotel management courses are yet to reach places like
Hindoo, from where the maximum number of people is
working in foreign lands.

Mobile phones and satellite TV have reached my
village, but not the health system and proper schools.
Last year, one hospital launched a mobile clinic from
Dehradun. Its main aim was to take affordable health
facilities to the remote Garhwal. I was happy at the
launch, as the van was to pass through Nagali also. It
was to halt at Tholdhar/Duggada, near my village. The
villagers have not heard anything about the mobile
clinic. Either the van is operating on paper or
without any publicity. I did not found any signboard
about the van in Duggada and Tholdhar.

Besides medical facilities and better schools, the
villagers feel that their future can change if land
reforms are introduced in a big way in Nagali.

I was in Nagali to attend my deceased uncle Hukum
Singh Gusain's rituals. I look at the visit as a study
trip to know my village in a better way and also as a
tribute to my Chachaji.
