Dear Friends,
The debate about gram pradhan elections was interesting and also quite a learning process. It did not remain confined to the mundane issues of elections but covered diverse issues including the discussion on the role and position of females in Uttarakhandi society.
There can not be two views about the hard and demanding life of females in hills. They were and still are the fulcrum of the entire economic and production process in hills. In the feudalistic type of society that we had before transition to democracy (process is still on), the females and some other groups were in a disadvantageous position. In the era of feudalism conditions of similar nature prevailed throughout the world. Democracy, education and democratic values are the best antidote for making world a better place for each and every group. The positive changes that are taking place with the evolution of democratic institutions around us are all there to see.
The life of Uttarakhandi males in the debate has been picturized in somewhat negative way. That is far from truth. The life of male population is also very strenuous. To survive in the harsh and difficult terrain of the Himalayas is not an easy job and one needs continuous struggle and efforts just to make a living. The difficult geographical conditions have made us hard working and this trait is entrenched in our psyche and personality. And even if a downturn is taking place in it due to a changes taking place around, it will take many more years for even a minute slide. Although the trend to consume liquor and gutka has increased tremendously even among young people in recent times it shall not be just and proper to generalize this issue and give an impression that the only job of male section in the hills of Uttarakhand is to consume liquor. There is no denying that consumption of liquor affects our over all performance if not taken in moderate
quantity.
It is very heartening to see the interest and affection the Uttarakhandi generation next is showing towards their native place. It is a healthy sign and will certainly help in the growth and development of this area.
Regards,
Pushpender Gusain, Chandigarh
