Hi Folks,
A very happy Harela,
The Harela basket(Chhapari) in Sanju'sletter sent a train of nostalagic thoughts down the memory lane.As kids there was competition about the size and the hues of harela , The smell was fresh butter(naurdi) with whichwe were aatoined still hovers in the thought and the taste of thesame surpasses all kinds of cottage cheeses,Dutch cheese and German lard tasted abroadFinally the immersion ceromony allowed you to havve a much desired outing with your cousinsand friends
Uttraknd festivals are chldren-centric and agasronomic delight for that matter an annaul Shrada(yearly remeberance of dears departed) was awaited keenly for its Ryata and Dar
im ki chutney. In anticipation elders could take all odd and sundry jobs from them.
But then Harela is special now as we are seemingly concerned about enviro degradetion,
bye now folks till we celebrate Raksa-bandan with Janu-Punnu.

Harela is remarkably an ultimate Uttarakhandi festival that is been celebrated to welcome the rainy season. This festivity falls on the first day of Shravan, (which is of course today as per Hindu Panchanga). Ten days before the due date, seeds of either five or seven kinds of grains are mixed together and sown in pots inside the darkroom, The sowing is done either by the head of the family or the family priest. It is done ceremoniously and water is sprinkled daily till last day worship. In addition, one day before the actual celebration of the festival (last day of Month Aasarh) mock weeding is been done with small wooden hoes. Gaily painted images of Shiva and Parvati and their off springs are prepared and worshipped on the Shankranti day. Yellowish -green shoots Harela are placed on the head gear.
In every house AMA-BUBU/IZA- BABU use to bless with following words
JEE RAYA JAGI RAYA, DUBE JAI PANAPIYA, SYAU JAI BUDHDHI HOO, SHERAK JAI TARAN HOO, GAONK PADHAAN HAI JAYA,,,,
The consequence of Harela lies in the fact that it provides an opportunity to the cultivator to experiment the quality or flaw of seeds in small scale which suppose to use in mass scale, at the same time for young dudes (like me ) its time to get pocket money from elders.
Once again I wish you all a very happy Harela. Bhagwan se yehi prarathana hai "is prithwi ko global warming se dure rakhna aur sada such&samridhdhi banaye rakhna"
Best Wishes and Regards

Hi Pradeep,
you are right BURANS trees are usually quite tall, however if you go to higher altitude you will get to see shorter BURANS trees and even the color of the flower turns into white instead of red. I have seen shorter BURANS trees enroute to Rudaranath.

I am happy you got it even I was surprised to see this flower in Amsterdam….though I didn't got a chance to ask the details about this flower however one thing I noticed was that the height of the tree was much shorter than what we get to see in our hills. but the flower size, color, shape everything was exactly the same as our BURANS.

Pradeep
