2. Baba Haridass of Mount Madonna
Posted by: "mohit sati" mohit_sati@yahoo.com mohit_sati
Date: Fri Apr 4, 2008 3:57 am ((PDT))

Hello All,

Few months ago I went to meet a Mauni baba - Baba Haridass of Mount Madonna of Watsonville, California USA. Originally from Almora, this Baba has never spoken a word since 1952 and he well settled in California. Babaji keeps a small white slate and use black marker and small piece of cloth for communication. Looks very strange but those who have practiced it later admitted that this helps in mind purification. He likes Bhatt ki Dal very much and I have promised him that I would get enough Daal for him in the next trip to India. He has quite a few followers here and he also runs an orphanage in Haridwar. To my surprise, his ashram is in the midst of forest far from the town but very well maintained and self contained.

The Ashram has several facilities onsite including internet and a tennis court. It has a hanuman mandir, a big seating hall for pravachan, stage, several yoga suites and large kitchen that cooks creates strictly vegetarian meals. Baba has his dinner at 6pm and sleeps by 8pm. He allows kids to have Candies but no more than "one". He looked visibly happy when my daughter was running all over the place but after certain time asked me to calm her down.

This Ashram teaches Ashtanga form of Yoga and it has all lodging and boarding facilities. The ashram runs a private school with a grand show of Ramayana every year.

During Navratri, they also create Ravan, Kumbhakaran and Meghnad out of paper and bamboo and then use cranes and other farm equipment for their "Dahan". It is all done lawfully with permission from local government.

I'm sure fellow Kumaonis in Bay Area, California might have visited it several times but I think it is worth mentioning about Baba in this forum. If you have visited Bonfante Gardens, it is on the same road but little ahead into the woods. I'm living in Fremont California since 2000 but I came to know only in 2005 when a fellow Kuamoni friend of mine took me to his ashram. I was surprised.

I haven't contributed to this forum since a long time...

Shri DANGIJI, I have read several of your valuable posts, please let us know what do you think.....

Thanks and Regards
Mohit

Friends,

In some parts of Uttarakhand (Chait ka Maheena) is very
special for women. This month is also known as Bhitola ka Maheena
where parent visit to daughter and take some gifts etc their
dauthers. This system is very old in pahad. Women eagerly wait
this month to see their parent. I have recently returned from my
native place and I saw this system ours is till intact. This is
indeed a good sign. However, little bit of changes have taken.
Earlier, parent used to take "Halwa Puri" and Sari for
their daughter now in some parts, sweets are distributed.

I believe the under mentioned song has been made on
"Bhitola Festivel " :

"Nee Basu Ghughtu Chait Ki

Meeke Narayee Lagi Mait Ki"

To know some more facts about this festival :-

Vitauli: A cultural Move

Namaskar and PailagAs this month has a very special place in the heart of each and every Female of Uttarakhand, i would like to dedicate this mail to all the sisters and brothers celebaring Bhitauli, yessssss m talking about Bhitauli â€"I would prefer to call it as social-ritual in addition rather just a festival, It happens to fall in the month of Chaitra and celebrated in entire Uttarakhand with much pomp. It begins from the very first day of Shravan and celebrated equally in both the regions (Garhwal and Kumaon). It is a grand occasion of sharing gifts from the brothers to their married sisters. The religious rites and rituals during this festival are celebrated with much veneration. Brother suppose to visit sister’s in-laws and get updated with the news at her end, in addition he has to carry gifts (sarees, jeweleries etc) and some home made confectioneries like khazure, kheer, puri, puwe, "gud ki bheli" etc. Later, in the evening sister use to distribute those
confectioneries in the entire village, just to share the pleasure of the occasion, that certainly implies the concern and care towards sister/daughter from her brother or parents.
Of courses changes can be observed as time passing; westernization/ globalization/ urbanization or modernization have not left this untouched, populace prefer to send money-orders or drafts (or some don’t even know about this at all) to just fulfill the revere.
We all know, most of our celebrations are society oriented, interestingly one prominent aspect of this too is enrichment of cultural matters, second it lies in the hearts of the social bonds keeping mutual love alive, that too around d scenario where everybody running after the lavish means.
I may just request, if possible please visit (or call if not) your married sisters on this very traditional occasion, let her also know how seriously you care about her, n n yesss yss ysss plz don’t forget to send her some nice gift :) and confectioneries too, that way you r contributing towards this ritual and keeping her happy too.
For more information on this just click:

Thank to Hem Pant for the reminder:

Highs of
Himachal
Himachal Pradesh, today, is one of the leading states in the country, when it comes to the literacy rate, per capita income, primary health, infant mortality rate, electrification, drinking water facility and banking coverage. Pratibha Chauhan looks at the giant strides in development made by this small and once-backward hill state
FROM a fledgling centrally administered territory comprising 30 princely states in 1948 to its current numero uno status in the country on several parameters of development, the hill state of Himachal Pradesh has crossed many milestones in less than 60 years. The actual period of development is even lesser considering that the growth momentum picked up only after Himachal Pradesh attained full statehood in 1971.
IT'S OFFICIAL
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on the state's progress:
Starting from scratch, the state has emerged as a leading state in several fields like education, health and infrastructure. What is more important is to maintain that numero uno position and further improve on it.
Besides power, tourism and industry, there is immense potential for growing off-season vegetables, floriculture and mushroom cultivation that can considerably enhance the earning capacity of people in rural areas.
One area where the state could have done better is in realising its vast potential in hydro-power generation.
The laudable progress that the hill state has made in 60 years of its existence is no less a tribute to its political stability and efficacy of administrative delivery in ensuring continuity of programmes and policies.
Long regarded as the poor cousin of its more illustrious neighbours — Punjab and Haryana — the metamorphosis of Himachal Pradesh from a backward hill state to one of the most developed states in the country has been truly remarkable.
Even in the worst of times, people inhabiting the Land of Gods would, perhaps, have scored highly on the happiness index. Nature's bounty manifest in mighty mountains and enchanting valleys has traditionally been more uplifting for the hill people than the lure of the lucre.
That the hill state has matched or bettered the best administered states in the country in terms of life expectancy, literacy rate, per capita income, per capita GDP growth, health, infrastructure and education is proof of its development in material terms too.
Development means different things to different people across the world. Despite adding the human element for measuring development by creating the Human Development Index (HDI) scale, renowned economist Amartya Sen was still not satisfied and termed it a "vulgar measure" owing to its limitations.
For want of a better yardstick, the HDI scale nonetheless remains an important signifier of human development. A recent survey by a reputed news magazine placed Himachal Pradesh as the number one state in the country on the HDI scale as far as the life expectancy at birth, literacy and per capita GDP are concerned.
The state recorded a growth rate of 9.3 per cent in the last financial year - a little above the national rate, and ranks among the leading states with the highest per capita income (Rs 36,783 according to 2001 census). Recently, the state has been officially declared as having 100 per cent banking coverage. Despite the mountainous terrain, Himachal Pradesh has achieved the highest per capita tele-density in the country.

Work in progress at a pharmaceutical unit in Baddi, which has emerged as an industrial hub

Himachal has aganwadis even in its remotest parts

Himachal is making efforts to tap its potential for hydel power

Literacy is one parameter where the hill state can be truly proud. From a mere seven per cent recorded at the inception of Himachal Pradesh in 1948, the state has achieved a literacy rate of 77.13 per cent (2001 census) with the female literacy pegged at 67.4, which is much higher than the national figure. A concerted effort to ensure universalisation of primary education in the state has brought down the dropout rate at primary stage of education to 0.89 per cent.
To encourage enrolment and reduce the dropout rate, various scholarships are being given to practically all sections, including girls, wards of army personnel, OBCs, SCs, STs and the poor.
In the area of primary health, the country's leading state Kerala lost its top position to HP. Health indicators like infant mortality rate, male to female infant mortality, percentage of homes with tap water, doctors per lakh people, sex ratio and health spending have been amongst the best in the country.
The fact that the state had achieved cent per cent electrification and drinking water facility way back in 1987 and 1994, respectively, underscores the inclusive nature of development.
One of the most heartening aspects of Himachal's growth story has been public spending in the social welfare sector. Nearly 44 per cent of the expenditure in the current annual plan has been dedicated to the social sector. Social security cover has been provided to 2.12 lakh beneficiaries by way of old age and widow pensions and rehabilitation allowance to the physically challenged. Some of the new schemes launched for the welfare of the underprivileged and needy, especially women, include Mother Teresa Asahay Matri Sambal Yojna , Mukhya Mantri Kanyadan Yojna, and Indira Gandhi Balika Suraksha Yojna.
The state took the lead in the country by enacting a landmark legislation, making it mandatory for children to take care of their parents in the twilight of their life. "It is only after enactment of the HP Parents Maintenance Act 2001 that other states took similar steps. In that respect the hill state has shown the way to rest of the country", says Anuradha Thakur, Director, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Industrial growth has shown a remarkable upturn even as its neighbours Punjab and Haryana cry themselves hoarse over the grant of concessions to the industry by the Centre. A clean and green environment coupled with uninterrupted power supply and industrial-friendly climate have beckoned big names like Ranbaxy, Proctor and Gamble and Wipro to the state. The state has made spectacular progress in the last four years by attracting an investment of Rs 21,821 crore and providing employment to over three lakh persons.
One of the indicators of progress in any society is the proactive role of civil society. In Himachal, the self-help group (SHG) movement has spread across the state and is now firmly established. There are 29,000 SHGs functioning in the state with help from the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and other agencies.
The SHG movement was initiated by the Chinmaya Tapovan Trust, mainly in Kangra district in 1994. Within five years, the movement grew by leaps and bounds with NABARD requesting the Chinmaya Tapovan Trust to function as a resource centre for training bankers, volunteers and government functionaries from North India.
The Chinmaya Tapovan Trust has been functioning as a resource centre for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal, "The single largest factor which gave a fillip to SHGs among women was the existing network of mahila mandals, which lapped up the opportunity for their economic empowerment," says Dr Shama Maitri, National Director of the Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development (CORD).
Some observers credit the state's development story partly to its reasonably stable polity - the state has had only five chief ministers since gaining full statehood. The successive Congress and BJP governments have ensured uniform development of the state.
However, all is not hunky-dory. Unemployment is becoming a major social and political issue. In a state of 65 lakh inhabitants, nearly 10 lakh youth are unemployed and this is a major challenge for the policy-makers. The government's thrust is on promoting industry and tourism for not just resource generation but also for creating jobs.
Fed on liberal central aid over the years and supplemented by dose of populist politics, that have fought shy of taxing services, the state has run up a massive debt of Rs 18,000 crore. Nearly Rs 1800 crore goes every year towards debt servicing.
However, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh feels that Himachal Pradesh is no exception in this regard as all states manage on huge borrowings. "The income of the state is increasing year by year and I am confident that we will be able to not only write off these borrowings but will be able to generate substantial resources," he says optimistically.
The industrialisation of the state, which has so far remained confined to the fringes, has brought only limited benefits. Not all units are adhering to the mandatory condition of giving 70 per cent of the jobs to Himachalis.
"Now we have a follow-up mechanism to ensure that the condition of giving 70 per cent of the jobs to youth from within the state is adhered to. There will be random checks even after the unit comes into production and has been granted permanent registration," says Anil Khachi, Director, Industries. He says the initial momentum is good and now efforts are being made towards providing the best infrastructure so that those who have made investments stay on to reap good returns.

'Early ripening of ""Kaafal"" a fall out of global warming' ..!!

Posted by: "KSRAWAT" sooni_ksr00@hotmail.com

Wed Apr 2, 2008 12:49 am (PDT)

Dear All.!!!

http://www.paurigarhwal.com/ http://pauri-garhwal-group.blogspot.com/

The early ripening of the popular 'Kaafal' wild fruit in Uttarakhand is being seen by experts as a fallout of global warming in the Himalayan region.

The edible wild fruit has hit the markets this year a month before than the usual time and it is being sold at four times higher than its normal rate.

The regional fruit markets received the supply of 'Kaafal' fruit on Sunday and the "surprised" traders bided a higher rate for it, sources said.

Such incidents are example of the impact of climate change and global warming that has begun to affect the Himalayan region in many ways, experts said.

Glacier retreat, early flowering and early leaf production in many trees, and arrival of mosquitoes at altitudes beyond their traditional range are some of the examples of the climate change in the region, they said.

Eminent ecologist and vice-chancellor of HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar, Garhwal said "a species can fruit early in a direct response to warming." "However, it can start fruiting also under a stress, such as drought," he said.

The warming by enhancing the rate of evaporation can cause water stress on trees, thus forcing them to complete reproductive cycle quickly, he said.

This is for your information please.

Best Regards,

K.S.RAWAT
It is perhaps due to the lack of political will that the hills of Uttarakhand still waits for better rail & air connectivity...by Pauri Garhwal Group!

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
-George Linnaeus Banks

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,
'Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.'

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of
the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large
pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth
water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared
to be famished.

They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to
their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and
take a spoonful. But because the handle was longer than their arms, they
could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, 'You have seen Hell.'

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same
as the first one.

There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made
the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same
long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump,
laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'

It is simple,' said the Lord. 'It requires but one skill. You see they
have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of
themselves.'

It's estimated 93% won't forward this.

If you are one of the 7% who will, please forward this with the title '7%'.

I'm in the 7% - Remember that I will always like to
share my spoon with you .

Palace in Barhanpur where Mumtaz died

Pavilion where Mumtaz is said to be buried

NOW READ THIS.......

No one has ever challenged it except Prof. P. N. Oak, who believes the
whole world has been duped. In his book Taj Mahal: The True Story, Oak says
the
Taj Mahal is not Queen Mumtaz's tomb but an ancient Hindu temple palace of
Lord Shiva (then known as Tejo Mahalaya ) . In the course of his research O
ak discovered that the Shiva temple palace was usurped by Shah Jahan from
then Maharaja of Jaipur, Jai Singh. In his own court ch ronicle,
Badshahnama,
Shah Jahan admits that an exceptionally beautiful grand mansion in Agra
was taken from Jai SIngh for Mumtaz's burial . The ex-Maharaja of Jaipur
still
retains in his secret collection two orders from Shah Jahan for
surrendering the Taj building. Using captured temples and mansions, as a
burial place for
dead courtiers and royalty was a common practice among Muslim rulers.

For example, Humayun,Akbar, Etmud-ud-Daula and Safdarjung are all buried
in such mansions. Oak's inquiries began with the name of Taj Mahal. He says

the term " Mahal " has never been used for a building in any Muslim countries
from Afghanisthan to Algeria . "The unusual explanation that the term Taj
Mahal derives from Mumtaz Mahal was illogical in atleast two respects.

Firstly, her name was never Mumtaz Mahal but Mumtaz-ul-Zamani ," he writes.
Secondly, one cannot omit the first three letters 'Mum' from a woman's
name to derive the remainder as the name for the building."Taj Mahal, he
claims, is a corrupt version of Tejo Mahalaya, or Lord Shiva's Palace . Oak
also says the love story of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan is a fairy tale cre ated
by
court sycophants, blundering historians and sloppy archaeologists Not a
single royal chronicle of Shah Jahan's time corroborates the love story.

Furthermore, Oak cites several documents suggesting the Taj Mahal predates
Shah Jahan's era, and was a temple dedicated to Shiva, worshipped by
Rajputs of Agra city. For example, Prof. Marvin Miller of New York took a
few
samples from the riverside doorway of the Taj. Carbon dating tests revealed
that the door was 300 years older than Shah Jahan. European traveler Johan
Albert Mandelslo, who visited Agra in 1638 (only seven years after Mumtaz's
death), describes the life of the cit y in his memoirs. But he makes no
reference to the Taj Mahal being built. The writings of Peter Mundy, an
English visitor to Agra within a year of Mumtaz's death, also suggest the
Taj was a noteworthy building well before Shah Jahan's time.

Prof. Oak points out a number of design and architectural inconsistencies
that support the belief of the Taj Mahal being a typical Hindu temple
rather
than a mausoleum. Many rooms in the Taj ! Mahal have remained sealed
since Shah Jahan's time and are still inaccessible to the public . Oak
asserts they contain a headless statue of Lord Shiva and other objects
commonly used for worship rituals in Hindu temples Fearing political
backlash, Indira Gandhi's government t ried to have Prof. Oak's book
withdrawn from the bookstores, and threatened the Indian publisher of the
first edition dire consequences . There is only one way to discredit or
validate Oak's research.

The current government should open the sealed rooms of the Taj Ma hal under
U.N. supervision, and let international experts investigate.

Do circulate this to all you know and let them know about this reality.....

Best public school in Mahivir Enclave/Vijay Enclave Palam area

Posted by: "Pushkar Bhatkoti" pushkarbhatkoti@yahoo.com   pushkarbhatkoti

Mon Mar 31, 2008 4:44 am (PDT)

Guys,

Just wondering if someone who lives/lived in Palam area (Mahavir enclave in Delhi), can advise the best public school at reasonable fees.

The fees must be withing INR 800-1200 for 7th or 6th class student.

Of course I did some research on google before posting this on this forum, and came up with below schools with sky high fees!

Government schools: Rs. 10
Shriram School: Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000
GD Goenka : Rs. 11,500 (for day boarding)
Springdales School: Rs. 1,100 to Rs. 1,300
Sardar Patel Vidyalaya: Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,500
American School: Rs. 21,600 to Rs. 59,000
DPS International: Rs. 10,000
Pathways: Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 19,000
British School: Rs. 9,600 to Rs. 13,300

Appreciate anyfurther web info or your comments.

Cheers!

Hi! Atul,

Nice Idea... I guess we can go for that.... but before that we need to ensure library setup and accountability in the school as during Feb Visit we were not able to find the Library in the school despite several books has already been given to them.

Dear DC and Members, Along with books I guess we can give a Library drawer with glass front and lock so that books could be visible and may be some of the students would like to read them.

Hi!

Hi! Prabhakar Ji.

This tour is for anyone (you, your family your frns relatives anyone) to promote tourism in Remote Uttaranchal areas and to pass benefits directly to local by giving small training to them.

Char Dham Yatra is gud idea but for the same Tours are already there and doesn't give major share to Native Guys.... But if someone is interested then we can make tieup with existing tours after finishing of our package.

Dear friends,

I shall be grateful if anyone here can help me in clearing my PF. I have submitted my application on 8th February 2008 along with relevant documents. The application was duly verified by the official and then submitted to the PF Office for the clearance.

Now, the form was returned by the PF department with a letter stating that 'father's name not present in the form 3A'.

I am in urgent need of money and almost two months have already lapsed. I don't know how much more time it will take to clear my dues, since it is a government department. I shal be grateful to the person who can help me in this regard.

Kindly suggest the best way by which I can get the money transferred in my bank account at the shortest period of time.

Anticipating a viable solution from PG members.

Warm regards,

Rajendra Prasad
